Winthrop, town, Suffolk County, eastern Massachusetts, on a peninsula extending into Boston Bay; incorporated 1852. Situated adjacent to Boston, it is a residential center. The community, settled in 1635, was separated from North Chelsea in 1852. It is named for John Winthrop, the first governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony.
