Weymouth, town, Norfolk County, eastern Massachusetts, on Hingham Bay, a residential community near Boston; incorporated 1635. The town includes the villages of Weymouth, North Weymouth, East Weymouth, and South Weymouth. Major manufactures are shoes, electrical equipment, and fertilizer. The area, originally known as Wessagusset, was settled in 1622. Abigail Adams, the wife of President John Adams, was born here, and her birthplace has been restored as a museum. The community is named for Weymouth, England. Population 55,601 (1980); 54,063 (1990); 54,063 (1996 estimate).
