Westfield, city, Hampden County, southwestern Massachusetts, on the Westfield River, near Springfield; incorporated as a city 1920. Bicycles, computers, precision machine goods, paper items, and firearms are manufactured here. Westfield State College (1839) is in the city. In 1640 a trading post was established on the site, making it the westernmost non-Native American settlement in Massachusetts Bay Colony at the time (hence its name). The community was a part of Springfield until 1669. During the 19th century, Westfield was a major whip manufacturing center.
