Tewksbury, town, Middlesex County, northeastern Massachusetts, near Lowell; incorporated 1734. It is a residential and industrial community; manufactures include plastic products, electronic equipment, computers, and industrial gases. Originally settled in 1637 as part of Billerica, the community was set off in 1734 as Wamesit and later was renamed, probably for Tewkesbury, England. One of the first hospitals in the U.S. was established here. Population 24,635 (1980); 27,266 (1990).
