Saugus, town, Essex County, northeastern Massachusetts, near Boston; incorporated 1815. It is primarily a residential and commercial center. The community was settled in 1629 and was named Lynn in 1637. In the 1640s the first successful integrated iron works in North America was established here; it has been reconstructed as part of Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site. The community was separated from Lynn in 1815 and subsequently became a diversified manufacturing center. Its industrial base declined in the early 20th century.
