Milton, town, Norfolk County, eastern Massachusetts, on the Neponset River, a residential suburb of Boston. The town incorporated in 1662. Milton is the site of Curry College (1879); Milton Academy (1807), a preparatory school; and the Museum of the American China Trade. The Blue Hill Meteorological Observatory (1885) lies on the line separating Milton and the neighboring town of Canton. Settled in 1636 as part of Dorchester and separated from it in 1662, Milton developed as a mill town and industrial center. Manufacturing declined in the 19th century and the large estates there broke up in the 1930s.
