Marlborough, also Marlboro, city, Middlesex County, eastern Massachusetts, near Boston; incorporated as a city 1890. Major manufactures include computers, electronic and electrical equipment, footwear and footwear-making machinery, and paper and metal products. The community, settled in the 1650s, is named for Marlborough, England. In the early 19th century footwear manufacturing began here, and at one time Marlborough ranked fifth in the U.S. in shoe production. Population 30,617 (1980); 31,813 (1990); 36,255 (2000).
