Malden, city, Middlesex County, northeastern Massachusetts, on the Malden River (near its junction with the Mystic), a suburb of Boston; settled about 1634, incorporated as a city 1882. Manufactures include fabricated metal, processed foods, electronic equipment, chemicals, and machine parts. Its industrialization began in the 19th century, when it became an important tanning and shoe-manufacturing center. The city is probably named for Maldon, England.
