Hingham, town, Plymouth County, eastern Massachusetts, on Hingham Bay; incorporated 1635. A residential community and a summer resort, Hingham is the site of the Old Ordinary (1680), a house containing a museum of 18th-century furnishings, and the Old Ship Church (1681), one of the oldest continuously used houses of worship in America. Settled about 1633, the community is named for Hingham, England, the original home of many of its early residents. Population 5,454 (1996 estimate).
