Agawam, town in Hampden County, southwestern Massachusetts, on the Connecticut and Westfield rivers, southwest of Springfield. It is a residential and trade center in a dairy-farming, poultry-raising, and truck-farming area. Manufactures include machine tools and leather goods. The town's name is derived from a Native American word probably meaning “crooked river” or “low meadowland.” Agawam was settled in 1635 and incorporated in 1855.
