Silver Spring, unincorporated community, Montgomery County, west central Maryland, between Rock Creek and Sligo Creek. It is primarily a residential suburb of Washington, D.C., and has some industry, including the manufacture of scientific instruments. It is the site of a number of research and development facilities and of Washington Theological Union (1969). Settled by the early 19th century, the community experienced its primary population growth after World War II. Population 72,893 (1980); 76,046 (1990); 76,046 (1996 estimate).
