Salisbury, city, seat of Wicomico County, southeastern Maryland, on the Wicomico River; settled 1732, incorporated as a city 1872. It is the commercial and industrial heart of the Delmarva Peninsula and a center of the region's large poultry-raising industry. Manufactures include electronic parts, machinery, and plastics. Salisbury State University (1925) is here. The community was founded in 1732 and named for Salisbury, England. Population 16,429 (1980); 20,592 (1990); 23,743 (2000).
