Roy's Place
2 E. Diamond Ave. - 301.948.5548

Recommended Dishes: The Tallulah Tondalayo
Review: Sandwich Heaven
If you've thought you knew all the types of sandwiches there are, you haven't been to Roy's. From Gourmet to Deli, they are all there, from Lobster & Crab Salads, Oysters, tongue, Ham, Turkey, Wurst, etc. You will spend some time reading the menu (and laughing over Roy Passin's comments. Tavern with lots of old posters on the walls.
Red Hot & Blue
16811 Crabbs Branch Way - 301.948.7333 $5.01 - $15
Cuisine: Barbecue
Recommended Dishes: Pulled pork platter ribs, pulled pork
Review: If You Like Good BBQ
They have an excellent selection of BBQ platters. It's a bit out of the heart of the city, so it usually doesn't require a very long wait time, but because of the food quality and their reputation, they do stay busy.
Review: Very Good BBQ and Pleasant Ambiance
This restaurant (technically in Rockville, not really Gaithersburg) is one of my standbys. It's never crowded for dinner and the service is lightning quick. The Memphis-style barbeque is very good, particularly the ribs and pulled pork items. The atmosphere is kind of nice, too, though I can't pinpoint quite why I like it. Although I no longer eat them, because they must be so bad for you, the nachos, complete with bbq pork or chicken are really great.
Guapo's
9011 Washington Boulevard - 301.977.5655 $5.01 - $15
Cuisine: Mexican
Recommended Dishes: Fajitas
Review: Waterfront Dining Mexican Style
Dine by a picturesque waterfront at the RIO, while sampling a great menu.
Ichiban
637 North Frederick Avenue - 301.670.0560
Cuisine: Korean
Review: A Sushi favorite
Ichiban has an excellent sushi bar as well as a full Japanese and Korean menu. Don't miss the all you can eat lunch buffet.
New Fortune Chinese Seafood Restaurant
16515 S. Frederick Avenue - 301.548.8886
Cuisine: Chinese
Recommended Dishes: dim sum (lunch)
Review: Wonderful dim sum, don't have to make the trek to Wheaton anymore
This is the largest restaurant in Montgomery county apparently. It offers carts of dim sum (every day at lunch) and the food is so good, I no longer need to bother going to Wheaton or Chinatown for great dim sum. Dinner is good too, but the dim sum lunch is the best!
Zios
9083 Gaither Road - 301.977.6300
Cuisine: Italian
Recommended Dishes: marguerhita pizza
Review: Best pizza in Gaithersburg
Great pizza with fresh mozzarella and great sauce. Most everything on the menus is quite good, but pizza stands out. Price is right, too.
Bugaboo Creek Steak House
15710 Shady Grove Road - 301.548.9200
Group Friendly<br>Parking: Lot
Recommended Dishes: Black Magic Steak
Review: Great Food but Slow Service
We frequent Bugaboo during the work week for our lunch. The welcome is warm, the food is always great and the wait staff is pleasent. The time frame, however, is unreasonable and for salad, soup and some chicken we wait at least one hour. Recommended for lunch if your employer is not pressed about you getting back late.
Il Porto
245 Muddy Branch Road - 301.590.0735
Cuisine: Italian
Recommended Dishes: white pizza, veal chop, eggplant parmigiana
Review: great local Italian place
Il Porto is the "0ld style" red-checked table cloth kind of Italian restaurant. The portions are large, the food is good and the white pizza is outstanding...
Star Diner
705 Center Point Way - 301.921.8222 $5.01 - $15
Family Style traditional Diner offering Breakfast all day and delicious meals, desserts, coffee drinks and full beer, wine, and liquor located in the Kentlands Market Square.
Cuisine: Diner
Recommended Dishes: Burgers, Reuben, Fish and chips, french toast
Review: I really enjoyed the food, atmosphere and friendly staff. Excellent breakfast place on the weekends...incredible french toast and pancakes. I have also gone with work crowd and my husband and kids. Delicious burgers and very kid friendly!
Chevys
668 Clopper Road - 301.926.6646 $5.01 - $15
Cuisine: Tex-Mex
Recommended Dishes: Fajitas fajitas
Review: Tex-Mex
The food is good in general once it makes it to the table. My biggest concern is that I have only had good service once in the 4 or 5 times that I have been there.
Review: Worthwhile chain restaurant
While I'm not usually a big fan of chain restaurants, this one impresses me. The food is extremely fresh and the tortillas, chips, and salsa are all delicious. Fairly small menu allows them to focus on what they do best: fajitas. My advice is to catch this place on a weekday night though, since it tends to get packed on weekends (since Gaithersburgians flock to chain restaurants).
Sushi Chalet
323 Muddy Branch Road - 301.948.7373 $15.01 - $30
Group Friendly
Cuisine: Sushi
Recommended Dishes: Try the mongolian grill eat elsewhere!
Review: For the Frugal Sushi Lover
Offers a "touch" of the true sushi experience by offering all you can eat sushi. The quality is good, however they go heavy on the rice (to fill you up). Lunch selection is not as complete as the dinner selection as they leave out the more pricey selections (unagi, ebi, etc.). They do also feature a mongolian grill where you can select a "meat" (chicken, shrimp, or beef) and have it stir fried with vegetables or other seasonings.
Review: Insulting that they try to call it sushi
I can sum the food up in one word: "ugh." The sushi is not terribly fresh and there are lots of unsavory rolls laden with cream cheese (!) and uncooked asparagus (or whatever might be on sale at the Weis market nearby). Some of the hot items are better, but still not worth the trip. Sushi buffets often offer pale imitations of the fine sushi we can get in the DC area, but Sushi Chalet offers some of the worst. I didn't rate the service since this is a buffet.
Joe's Crab Shack
221 Rio Boulevard - 301.947.4377
Cuisine: Seafood
Recommended Dishes: ugh-- nothing! NOT the 'surprise' sundae. For 8 bucks, by a gallon of Edy's
Review: Don't waste your time.
I ate at a Joe's Crab Shack in Houston years ago and really enjoyed it, so I was excited when it opened in the Rio plaza. I couldn't have been more disappointed when I saw huge lines, and once I got in, it was really not worth it. It was one of the loudest restaurants I'd ever been in. The wait staff would periodically have to do a silly dance when certain songs were played, and they did not look like they were enjoying it one bit. The food itself was about the quality of Red Lobster (I would expect better in an east coast city that knows from fresh seafood!), as everything seemed to be served swimming in butter. I will never be returning to this place
Review: Joe's Shack Surprise
We went to Joe's recently for my son's 12th birthday (his choice). I called ahead to see if they would do anything special for him and they said, "Oh, sure, just tell your waiter." Well, the special thing they did was hand him a dessert menu (no prices listed) at the end of the meal, and tell him to "Pick anything!" He picked a sundae. Weren't we surprised to find an $8.00 charge for the sundae on the bill! How generous! When we questioned the charge, they brought the manager over. Now it is really getting festive! He offered to "split the cost with us." Needless to say they have lost our business.
Chris' Steakhouse and Seafood Restaurant
201 East Diamond Avenue - 301.869.6116
Cuisine: Seafood
Recommended Dishes: non
Review: Don't bother
For a place the specializes in steak, the steaks were pretty bad. I had the New York Strip, medium rare. It came medium. My partner had NY strip medium and it came medium well. The steak it self was rather dry and had a way to much "char". This was basically the only taste. As for environment, Chris' is a local bar with not much concealing the dining area for the smoke. The "non-smoking" section was not very smoke free. I found the place to be bar and grill at white table cloth prices. Don't bother, I have better food at chain steak places.
