Bowie, residential city, Prince George's County, west central Maryland, midway between Annapolis and Washington, D.C.; incorporated as a city 1963. It is the site of Bowie State University (1865) and Bowie Race Course, a training facility for horses. Racehorse breeding on the famous Belair estate here began about 1750. The community of Bowie was founded in 1850 at a railroad junction and was named for a local family. The Belair estate was sold in 1958 to a development company, which built some 8000 homes on the grounds.
