Kennebunk, town, York County, southeastern Maine, on the Mousam River; settled 1650, incorporated 1820. Manufactures include footwear, plastics, engineering supplies, and electric parts. Along with nearby Kennebunkport, a resort town on the Atlantic Ocean (settled 1629), it was an important shipbuilding center in the 18th and 19th centuries. Kennebunk is a Native American word meaning “long cut bank.” Population 6,621 (1980); 8,004 (1990); 4,261 (1996 estimate).
