Bangor, city and seat of Penobscot County, central Maine, a port on the Penobscot River. Bangor is the commercial, distribution, and medical center of a large timber-producing and resort area. Paper, electronic equipment, and shoes are the chief manufactures. Husson College (1898), Bangor Theological Seminary (1814), the Eastern Maine Vocational-Technical Institute (1966), and Beal College (1891) are located in Bangor. The site was visited by the French explorer Samuel de Champlain in 1604 and was settled in 1769. Bangor was incorporated as a town in 1791 and as a city in 1834. During the 19th century Bangor was a great lumbering center, but the industry declined with competition from the railroads.
