Auburn, city, seat of Androscoggin County, southwestern Maine, on the Androscoggin River, opposite Lewiston; settled 1797, incorporated as a city 1869. Manufactures include plastic goods and electronic equipment. Lake Auburn, Taylor Pond, and a nearby ski area are popular recreation spots. Auburn's large footwear industry, begun in 1836, was responsible for much of the city's early growth, but is no longer a major economic factor.
