Houma, city, seat of Terrebonne Parish, southeastern Louisiana, on the Intracoastal Waterway and the Houma Navigation Canal; incorporated 1843. It is a retail and fishing center in a rich petroleum- and natural-gas-producing area. Manufactures include processed shrimp, oysters, petroleum, and natural gas; steel structures; and boats. The region was settled by Acadians in 1765, and the city is named for the local Houmas people.
