Bossier City, city, Bossier Parish, northwestern Louisiana, on the Red River, opposite Shreveport; settled 1830s, incorporated as a city 1950. Manufactures include oil-field machinery, plastic items, mobile homes, and fishing boats. It is the home of Barksdale Air Force Base, which is important to the city's economy, as is the Louisiana Downs racetrack. The city is named for Pierre E. J. P. Bossier, a soldier, congressman, and early settler.
