Danville, city, seat of Boyle County, central Kentucky; settled 1774, incorporated as a city 1836. Located in an agricultural region producing tobacco, corn, and Angus cattle, it has important tobacco markets and a variety of manufacturing concerns, including glass, plastics, and metal products. Centre College (1819; first college in the state) and Kentucky's first school for the deaf (1819) are here. Constitution Park is a point of interest, featuring nine buildings that date back to the early years of the city. One of the state's oldest settlements, Danville was the capital (1784-92) of the Kentucky district of Virginia, and Kentucky's state constitutional conventions were held here. Danville is named for Walker Daniel, attorney general of Kentucky district in 1783.
