Overland Park, city in northeastern Kansas, in Johnson County, between the Kansas (Kaw) and Blue rivers. The city is in the metropolitan region surrounding Kansas City, Missouri, and Kansas City, Kansas. It has substantial development of commercial and corporate offices, mostly in the architectural, engineering, telecommunications, and insurance fields. The Baker University School of Professional and Graduate Studies (1975) and a community college are based in the city. Overland Park is the home of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), whose visitors center celebrates the achievements of college athletes. The Deanne Rose Children's Farmstead features a replica of a Kansas farm of the 1850s in addition to a large petting zoo.
The community, located on what was part of the old Santa Fe Trail, was established in 1906 and incorporated in 1960. It grew rapidly in the 1960s. It is named for its location on a bluff that gave a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside.
