Atchison, city, seat of Atchison County, northeastern Kansas, on the Missouri River; incorporated as a town 1854, as a city 1881. Manufactures include metal castings, transportation equipment, sporting goods, animal feed, ethyl alcohol, hardware, mops, and processed food. The city is the seat of Benedictine College (1858). The Lewis and Clark Expedition visited the site in 1804. Fifty years later, Atchison became the first city in Kansas reached by the railroad; it was an important starting point for westward immigration. The aviator Amelia Earhart was born in Atchison, which is named for David R. Atchison, U.S. senator (1843-55) from Missouri.
