Marshalltown, city, seat of Marshall County, central Iowa, on the Iowa River; incorporated 1863. It is a commercial, transportation, and manufacturing center. Industrial control valves and measuring instruments, furnaces, air-conditioning equipment, corrugated containers, furniture, and pork products are manufactured. A community college is located here. The city was founded in 1853 and is named for Marshall, Michigan. Population 26,938 (1980); 25,178 (1990); 26,009 (2000).
