Clinton, city in eastern Iowa, on the Mississippi River, seat of Clinton County. Clinton is a trade, manufacturing, and transportation center of a rich agricultural area. Manufactures include corn products, paper items, chemicals, plastics, fertilizer, and structural steel. Mount St. Clare College (1918) is in the city. Also noteworthy is the Lillian Russell Theater, named for the actor, who is a Clinton native.
White settlers first came to the area in 1835, and the settlement was originally named New York; it was renamed for the statesman De Witt Clinton in 1855, and incorporated as a city in 1859. From the late 1850s to 1900, Clinton was one of the country's chief lumber-producing cities.
