Bettendorf, city, Scott County, eastern Iowa, on the Mississippi River; settled about 1840, incorporated as a city 1922. It forms the Quad Cities with Rock Island and Moline in Illinois, and Davenport in Iowa. Manufactures of Bettendorf include farm and construction machinery, processed food, chemicals, and tools and dies. Riverboat gambling on the Mississippi River has increased tourism. The city is named for William P. Bettendorf, who established (1908) the community's first important plant (a large machine shop).
