Kokomo, city, seat of Howard County, north central Indiana, on Wildcat Creek, in a rich farm area; incorporated 1865. Motor-vehicle parts, aluminum castings, metal alloys, and electronic equipment are among its major manufactures. The city is the site of Indiana University at Kokomo (1945). Founded in the 1840s, the community is named for a Miami Native American leader. Industrialization was spurred by the discovery of natural gas in 1886 and by the inventions (including an early automobile) of Elwood Haynes, who lived here.
