Zion, city, Lake County, extreme northeastern Illinois, on Lake Michigan; incorporated 1902. Manufactures include processed food and printed materials. Illinois Beach State Park is nearby. The community, founded as the headquarters of the Christian Catholic Church by John Alexander Dowie in 1901, is named for the biblical Zion, a hill in Jerusalem. It had a theocratic government until 1935. Population 17,861 (1980); 19,775 (1990); 22,866 (2000).
