Wilmette, village, Cook County, northeastern Illinois, on Lake Michigan, a residential community near Chicago; incorporated 1872. In the village are a junior college and a Baha'i temple (1930), which serves as the headquarters of the Baha'i faith in North America. The community is named for Archange Ouilmette, the part-Potawatomi woman who was granted land here in 1829. Parts of the village of Gross Point (incorporated 1874, dissolved 1919) were annexed by Wilmette in 1924 and 1926. Population 28,229 (1980); 26,690 (1990); 27,651 (2000).
