Quincy, city, seat of Adams County in western Illinois, on bluffs of the eastern bank of the Mississippi River. Manufactures include electrical and electronic equipment, air compressors, pumps, wheels, and soybean oil. Quincy is the seat of Quincy College (1859), a junior college, and a community college. Quinsippi Island, in this area of the Mississippi River, has recreational facilities. Also of interest are a natural history museum, the Quincy Art Center, and the Gardner Museum of Architecture and Design. The community was settled in 1821 and laid out in 1825. Quincy was incorporated as a city in 1840. It was an important station on the Underground Railroad for black slaves escaping to Canada. Both the city and the county are named for United States President John Quincy Adams. In 1993 floodwaters of the Mississippi River badly damaged parts of Quincy.
