North Chicago, city, Lake County, northeastern Illinois, on Lake Michigan; incorporated 1909. Medical services and research are an important part of the city's economy. Major products include pharmaceuticals and biochemical products. The University of Health Sciences/The Chicago Medical School (1912) is here. The Great Lakes Naval Training Center, with a naval hospital and a veterans hospital, is nearby. A 1937 sit-down strike at a steel plant here led to a 1939 U.S. Supreme Court decision ruling such strikes illegal. Population 38,774 (1980); 34,978 (1990); 35,918 (2000).
