Joliet, city, seat of Will County, northeastern Illinois, on the Des Plaines River and two ship canals; incorporated as a city 1852. A port on the Illinois Waterway, it is also an important rail junction and a major industrial center. Joliet's products include earthmoving equipment, steel items, roofing materials, and chemicals. Gaming is also a major industry. The University of St. Francis is here. The city was platted in 1834 and is named for Louis Joliet, a French explorer, who visited the site in 1673. After the opening of the Illinois and Michigan Canal in 1848 Joliet grew as a limestone-quarrying and steel-producing hub.
