Aurora, city in northeastern Illinois, in both Kane and DuPage counties. The city, a residential and industrial suburb of Chicago, is located on the Fox River. Manufactures include construction equipment, electric tools, steel furniture, and pumps. Services, particularly the health care and the life and health insurance sectors, are a growing part of Aurora's economy. Aurora University (1893) is in the city. Museums include the Aurora Historical Museum, the Aurora Regional Fire Museum, and SciTech, an interactive science and technology museum. The city is also home to the Schingoethe Center for Native American Cultures and the Blackberry Historical Farm-Village, a re-creation of an Illinois farm village that includes a museum and a children's section. The Red Oak Nature Center is in nearby North Aurora.
Among the city's landmarks are the Paramount Arts Centre, a restored movie palace built in 1931 and now a performance center, and the Sri Venkateswara Swami Temple, one of the few Hindu temples in the United States constructed by Indian artisans. Riverboat casinos are based in Aurora, where annual events include the early summer FoxFest, a three-day event featuring the City of Lights Music Festival and the Aurora Powerboat Championships.
