Valdosta, city, seat of Lowndes County, southern Georgia. The city is a commercial, manufacturing, and transportation center situated in an agricultural and timber-producing area. Manufactures include clothing, textiles, forest products, and printed materials. Valdosta State College (1906) is here, and Moody Air Force Base is nearby. The area was settled in 1821. Valdosta, named for Val de Aosta, a local estate, was established in 1860, when the county seat was moved here to meet the railroad. Population 37,596 (1980); 39,806 (1990); 43,724 (2000).
