Cairo, seat of Grady County, in southwestern Georgia near the Florida border, 322 km (200 mi) south of Atlanta. Cairo is an important marketing and shipping center for local farm produce, especially okra. Food processing once dominated Cairo's economy, however, the city's manufactures have taken on a greater variety. Food processing has diminished, while companies manufacturing metal products and clothing have grown. Agricultural products for the area include corn, cotton, peanuts, and sugar cane. Jackie Robinson, the first black to play major league baseball in the 20th century, was born in Cairo in 1919. Cairo was chartered as a town in 1870 and as a city in 1906.
