Albany, city in southwestern Georgia, seat of Dougherty County, at the head of navigation of the Flint River. Originally settled by the Creek, Albany is the shipping and industrial center of a farming area known for its pecans, peanuts, cotton, corn, tobacco, and livestock; large textile, meat-packing, and candy-manufacturing plants are here. Albany State University (1903), vocational schools, and a junior college are in Albany, as well a large United States Marine Corps supply base. Tourist attractions include an annual pecan festival and a museum with Creek artifacts; nearby is Radium Springs, a large natural spring. The city, named for Albany, New York, was an important cotton market until the boll weevil infestation in the early 20th century. Albany was incorporated in 1838.
