Review: Can't Say Enough...
The only bad thing to say is that it is not in Boston (where I live).. This is probably the best restaurant that I have ever been to. Great service, funky atmosphere, consistently incredible food! Every year that I am in Fort Myers, I try to go there at least 2 or 3 times.. The food is fun and interesting.. always a great combination of classic cuisine and phenominal sauces.. Who would have thought purple potatoes could be so tasty.. the filet with gorgonzola pesto is my boyfriends all time favorite.. Great wine list and fabulous desserts.
Fish Tales Seafood Restaurant & Market
6331 South Tamiami Trail - 941.925.1135 $15.01 - $30

Excellent food. Quality service. The market is fantastic. Freshest fish in town with a knowledgable staff.

Bangkok Restaurant
4791 Swift Road - 941.922.0703 $5.01 - $15
The interior of this restaurant transports the diner to Thailand through the use of an abundance of wood carvings and decorations, colorful fabrics and the traditional dress of the wait staff. Located in a strip mall at the corner of Swift and Proctor Roads, its reputation for good value has spread and it is usually quite crowded with diners and people waiting for their take out orders.
Cuisine: Thai

Excellent decor, food, and service. I couldn't recommend this restuarant highly enough!

Cuisine: Continental / European
Recommended Dishes: Tuna, duck, lamb shank and any of the nightly specials
Review: A Favorite of Locals
This may well be one of the best restaurants in the Sarasota area. On the pricey side for this town but worth every penny. Not widely advertised but known to all local gourmets and generally booked solid so reservations are a must. Even after some redecorating it is still on the noisy side with a full house, so come here to eat and enjoy the delicious food and not for a quite conversation.
Bonefish Grill

A bright cheery main dining room with large picture windows along the entire side wall. Review: Surprisingly good
The service was average but I was pleasantly surprised at the food. I dislike seafood and usually other items are limited and tasteless but I had a fabulous meal.

Mexican Grill
2211 N Washington Blvd - 941.366.2808
Authentic Mexican cuisine. Lunch buffet. Cantina featuring live music & dancing.
Cuisine: Mexican
Recommended Dishes: Flautas, Mole, Beefsteak, Shredded Beef Tacos
Review: When Mexican Grill opened a few years back, my husband & I started dining there a couple of times a week. The food is wonderful & the service is pleasant & prompt. Having lived in Mexico for a brief time we can attest to the authenticity of the food. It isn't the typical American idea of what Mexican food is, it is what you would find in Mexico. Not only the food but the atmosphere as well. Since moving to the opposite side of town 2 years ago, we haven't been there in almost that time, but last week we found ourselves in the neighborhood & decided to pay it a visit. We found that they had expanded the space & included room for a cantina & live music & dancing. We went for lunch so the place was quiet. The menu hadn't changed much in the two years and the prices were still just as reasonable as we remembered them. I ordered my favorite Flautas but my husband decided to try another one of their new additions, the lunch buffet. I was delighted with my choice. The Chicken flautas were just as generous & flavorful as always. The rice & beans were wonderful as well. The portions were so big, I had to take half of it home. My husbands decision to try the buffet proved a poor one however. At noon, when we arrived, the buffet was already half empty & what was there was only room-temperature at best. In the hour we were there, no one made any effort to refill the buffet or to check the quality of what had been out there for some time. The taco meat on the buffet was ground beef instead of the shredded beef that you can find on the menu. The ground beef was far too salty for even my husband who is a salt-aholic. The refried beans that came with my flautas were great, but we found that the ones on the buffet were almost runny & seemed to have a powdery taste to them as if someone had tried to thicken them up with masa or something. Not at all pleasant. The experience didn't turn us off though. No one can like everything. The food on the menu & the service is great enough for us to continue to stop by when we find ourselves in that neighborhood again. We'll just make sure we steer clear of the buffet.
The Olive Garden
4900 South Tamiami Trail - 941.923.3136 $5.01 - $15
Part of a Nationwide chain featuring Italian fare at reasonable prices.
Cuisine: Italian
Recommended Dishes: Pasta Fagioli.
Review: Last month I ate at Olive Garden. I had stuffed chicken parmigian with pasta fagioli & tiramisu. A week later I was 1000 miles away from home & my friend took me to an Olive Garden near his home. I had the same meal, in the same boothe, next to the same photo & I swear I may have had the same waiter. There's something eerie about that in my book. Almost like pod people are taking over the restaurant industry. Waitstaff with the personalities of "Alice" & "Flo" have been replaced by the Stepford Waiters of corporate America. No individuality, just "hospitaliano". The food is good (I think the Pasta Fagioli is the BEST I've ever had.)& so is the service. Nothing unexpected & nothing you don't pay for. If playing it safe is your thing then Olive Garden is a good bet. If you like driving in the slow lane of the AAA approved highway going just under the speed limit on yor way to buy blue chip stock in time to be homje fro your mid-day nap...then go to Olive Garden. But for those of us who like the scenic route & live life by the seat of our pants...We'll see you in the rearview mirror.
Maine Seafood Co.
5769 S Beneva Road - 941.921.6396 $15.01 - $30
Small restaurant & market reminiscent of the lobster shacks on the Southeastern coast of Maine. Self-service style dining (order, pay & pick-up at counter) & casual atmosphere also typical of Maine. Authentic "Down East Maine" regional cooking. Winner of the 2001 Taste of Sarasota best appetizer for Authentic Maine Lobster Roll. Located on the corner of Clark & Beneva in the Jackson Hewitt Plaza.
Cuisine: Seafood
Recommended Dishes: The Shore dinner: 1 lb. lobster, 1 lb. steamers, 1 lb. mussels with corn on the cob & red potatoes. $17.95 The fried Maine clams with bellies. Maine Lobster Roll. none here The Crab cakes at Barnacle Bills! Not a thing
Review: A Taste of Maine in Florida
If you'd like to taste seafood the way it was meant to be, just visit Maine Seafood Co. They specialize in a regional cooking that is unique to southeastern Maine. The folksy atmosphere of a typical Maine lobster shack is authentically replicated in not only the food but in the decor and staff as well. And the self-service dining style only adds to the relaxed mood. Order at one window, pay at the other then pick up your food, drinks & utensils and sit back and enjoy! The food is prepared in the simple "Down East Maine" style. Not weighed down in seasonings, rather allowing the natural flavor of the seafood to be the star. They offer a wide variety of menu items from clams, scallops & lobster for the avid seafood fan to huge 1/2 lb. burgers for the land-lubbers. Dinner prices from $7.75 to $17.95 with lobsters at current market price. Rather cook at home? They have a great selection of fresh seafood from Maine to take home & cook yourself! Allow yourself some time for dine-in or take-out. This isn't fast food & you'll taste the difference! But it is well worth the wait!
Review: Maine Seafood Co. is a wonderful place! My husband & I are native Mainer's & part-time residents of Punta Gorda. Whenever we get homesick for Maine, we drive up to Sarasota to Maine Seafood Co. The food is great & the service is wonderful. The chef from Maine is a real delight to talk to & the gal from Connecticut is so friendly & helpful! And when we had our summertime clam bake for our friends, they were all great about ordering everything we needed & we were able to even able to buy all of the condiments & utensils that we needed right at the restaurant! Everyone & everything about it makes eating there a real pleasant night out. We've also taken home some of their live lobsters & fresh Maine seafood & it's terrific! We're so glad that we found Maine Seafood Co. & we recommend it highly to everyone!
Review: Hospitality lost on the trip from Maine to Florida
Not very friendly. Food used to be okay but they changed the way they cook it most every week. Staff dirty looking and non-smoking establishment, but the workers smoke like chimneys! A real turn off for most.
Review: Loss of chef = loss of customer service

Review: Quality & Service at all time low
Shortly after the opening of Maine Seafood Co., our family has enjoyed our weekly visits to the quaint, authentic Maine Lobster shack. Those days are gone! When they lost the only true Mainer that worked there, the only one who could cook the dishes in the true down-east style, they lost the only authenticity they ever had. The owner/manager/new cook is a joke with the phony accent & stories of Maine (he's never even been there and is a native of FL) only insult the New Englanders that used to enjoy dining there. The dishes are now prepared with fillers and so loaded down with junk that you can't taste the seafood. In addition to the lousy food the staff and restaurant have gone to pot too. The place is no longer as clean as it used to be and it's no wonder with the staff they have who look as though they haven't seen a bath in sometime. Dirty fingernails are a real stomach turner....so...we no longer eat there. Try Barnacle Bill's or any of the other fine seafood restaurants in town.
Review: Where'd the "Maine" in Maine Seafood Co. go?
We've been loyal customers since this placed opened, but no more. We just returned to Florida from up Maine for the fall and winter and found that our favorite restaurant wasn't the same. The nice cook from Maine isn't there anymore and the one's who are there aren't worth a bit of him. He used to be so friendly and chat it up with us and knew just how to cook things the Down East Maine way. But now them two they got there are rude, dirty, ignorant and don't know a bit about cooking. Can't even answer questions about the fresh (?) fish. We won't be going back.
Gastronomia Pasta & Wine Bar
6392 N Lockwood Ridge Rd - 941.358.6446 $15.01 - $30
Located in the shopping center at University Pkwy & Lockwood Ridge Rd., this outgrowth of the "original" in South Sarasota, continues the tradition of serving various pasta dishes and wine at reasonable prices. The menu also includes a selection of chicken, veal, beef and seafood dishes. At lunchtime sandwiches are also available. Early dining menu and Happy Hour from 4 - 6pm.
Cuisine: Italian
Review: Our party of six arrived about 15 min. before our scheduled reservation but the table was waiting for us. We were ushered to the table by the manager/host and given only regular dinner menus even though we were well within the early dining time. It took several requests to our waiter for the early dining menu before it appeared. Drink orders were taken and faccacio bread and an olive oil, garlic and herb mixture, for dipping the bread, was put on the table while we made our dinner selections. Two in our party ordered from the early menu and the rest from the regular menu because of its greater variety. All ordered pasta of one kind or another. The early dining dishes looked almost as large as the regular dishes although they were supposed to be smaller quantities. All portions were large enough for sharing, although no one did. Everyone was happy with their choices except yours truly. I ordered "Penne Con Broccoli", a dish not too difficult to make, and found it tasteless. After "doctoring" it with salt and some of the bread dipping mixture I considered it acceptable although if I wasn't with other people I would have sent it back and ordered something else. After leaving the restaurant we learned that we were there during happy hour and drinks should have been 2 for 1. Those that ordered drinks were never offered the second drink. The waiter was pleasant enough but possibly not fully traine
Oaks Open Pit BBQ
6112 S Tamiami Trl - 941.922.7778 $5.01 - $15
Cuisine: Barbecue
Review: Being born & raised in the South I am by birth a fan of BBQ. Knowing this about me, several friends have for some time encouraged me to try The Oaks touting it Sarasota's best BBQ. So on a recent afternoon, my husband & I decided to see if the accolades were deserved. When I walked through the door I seemed to be enjulfed in testosterone & symbols of male over-compensation. Amid the wood paneled walls stood a menagerie of taxidermed animals rumored to have been hunted by the owner himself. Some people aren't bothered by this, my hubby being one of them, but me on the otherhand, it sickens. Now I'm not a vegetarian & you won't find me demonstrating or tossing red paint on a fur coat-but I don't approve of hunting for sport & I really don't like to see Bambi's murdered mother staring at me while I eat. But my husband insisted we stay so I tried to focus on the menu & ordered the pork BBQ dinner with fries & stew (which later, to my disappointment, I discovered was Brunswick Stew). My husband had the Beef BBQ with double fries. The service was friendly & amazingly prompt. The portions were so huge that each of us could only manage to finish half & took the rest home for dinner. The meat was tender & well cooked with the rich flavor that all BBQ should have. Although there was a good amount of fat in the meat it wasn't so much that we minded considering the generous portion size. As fas as the BBQ sauce goes, neither of us caared for it. We agreed that it tasted too strongly of vinegar & we would have preferred a darker, sweeter sauce. The fries were large, crisp & not too greasy. The Brunswick Stew was well, Brunswick Stew I guess. Not being a fan of it I can't fairly say if it was good or bad since I think it is all bad. All in all we spent a little over $20.00 which was fair but we didn't like the food enough to go back, & honestly, even if the food had been better, I wouldn't go back because of the decor.
