Margate, city in southeastern Florida, near the Atlantic Ocean. Located in Broward County, Margate is a residential suburb of Fort Lauderdale. The city has grown rapidly since the 1960s, when it had a population of 2646. Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge and the Everglades are nearby. Population 36,044 (1980); 42,985 (1990); 53,909 (2000).
