Hallandale Beach, city, Broward County, southeastern Florida, on the Atlantic Ocean, near Miami; incorporated as a town 1927, incorporated as a city 1947. It is a residential, retirement, and tourist center with a strong retail trade. Gulfstream Park, a racetrack for Thoroughbred horses, and Hollywood Greyhound Track, for greyhound racing, are here. The community, settled in the 1890s as a Lutheran colony, is named for Reverend Bengt Magnus Halland, an early settler. In 1947, the city limits were extended through annexation of the surrounding areas, but the main population growth did not occur until the 1960s. In 1999 the city officially changed its name from Hallandale to Hallandale Beach. Population 36,517 (1980); 30,996 (1990); 34,282 (2000).
