Fort Pierce, city, seat of Saint Lucie County, eastern Florida, on the Saint Lucie River and the Indian River (a lagoon connected by inlets to the Atlantic Ocean); incorporated 1901. It is a commercial, processing, and shipping center for a livestock and citrus producing region. A community college is here. The city is named for Lieutenant Colonel Benjamin K. Pierce, commander of the fort begun here in the late 1830s during the Second Seminole War.
