Waterbury, city in New Haven County, western Connecticut, on the Naugatuck and Mad rivers. It was noted as a leading producer of brass products, but the city is making a transition from its heritage of mass production to a light-manufacturing and service-orientated economy. Financial, medical, and governmental activities now are major employers. Manufactures include electrical fittings, specialty chemicals, electronics, molded plastic parts, and screws and fasteners.
Waterbury is the site of Teikyo Post University (1890), a branch of the University of Connecticut, and a community college. Cultural institutions include the Mattatuck Museum, which maintains a collection of paintings by Connecticut artists. The city has a symphony orchestra, ballet company, and theater.
