Louis' Lunch 263 Crown Street - 203.562.5507 $5.01 - $15 Cuisine: Burgers Recommended Dishes: cheeseworks (burger with onion, tomato and a cheese product of some sort--mmm) Review:The first and best hamburger! The best hamburger in all the world! Review:Hamburger Heaven If you're anywhere near New Haven around lunchtime and before 4pm on a Tuesday or Wednesday, or 1:30am Thursday-Saturday, do yourself a favor and stop by Louis Lunch for a piece of hamburger heaven. These burgers have been made the same way for a hundred years, and clearly practise makes perfect. Served on slices of toasted white bread, the beef is ground on the premises every morning and cooked to perfection on vertical grills that produce the most delectable, unfatty beef patty this side of Hamburg. Order the cheeseworks rare (not that there are many other options--late night you might be lucky and score a steak sandwich, which is also rather good) and watch the masters go to work. Don't be put off by the brusque service--it's all part of the charm--and for the love of god don't ask for ketchup, because all you'll get is a dirty look. Oh, and don't forget the potato salad, which is inexplicably good. If you have any room for more food, you can try the homemade pies, or you can do what comes naturally to any regular, and order another round.
Mamoun's 85 Howe Street - 000.000.0000 Recommended Dishes:stuffed grape leave's an a combo platter with lamb!!!yummmm baba ganouj, stuffed grape leaves, falafel Review:Greatest in New Haven The best Middle Eastern food in the U.S. The Syrian cuisine is outstanding and their waitresses are the best! Frank Pepes 157 Wooster Streeet - 203.865.5762 Cuisine: Pizza Recommended Dishes:White Clam Pizza (no mozzarella), Bacon Pizza Review:World's Finest Pizza
Review:wow! I have heard about Pepe's my whole life and tried it for the first time today with my husband and two sons. It is absolutely the best pizza I have ever tasted anywhere. The clam pizza was terrific, as was the pepperoni. We are true pizza lovers and Pepe's is now our favorite. We live far away but we will visit yearly. Review:Perfect! I've heard so much about Pepe's and finally took my son this past weekend and we are now hooked! We will be back many times, it is truly the best pizza we have ever had. Review:If pizza was invented here, it was perfected here. Sausage or clam without the cheese. The cheese seems to deaden the garlic and clam flavor.
Modern Apizza 874 State Street - 203.776.5306 Recommended Dishes:Sausage, mushrooms and moots with onions Any pizza Pizza with anything except the white clam. Review:To hell with Wooster Street! This is the pizza of choice of the folks who KNOW pizza. Probably even better than Sally's and Pepe's... without the 2 hour wait. The ingredients are fresh (superb sausage and great sauce)the service is quick and efficient and in the 30+ years that they have been making pizza, even the change of owners never missed a beat. This is pizza with thin crisp crust and far better than you can imagine. Review:Top 4 in New Haven Very good apizza. Not as good as Sally's or Pepe's, but about as good as Bru Rm's. The advantage is better parking and shorter wait than the Wooster St. places. Review:Red pie heaven Most reviews of New Haven Pizza rank Modern third after Pepe's and Sally's. For classic red pies from the brick oven (the only way to cook them), Modern is #1 hands down. Pepe's is the undisputed king of the white clam pizza but there it ends. Review:I used to be able to reserve a table
Lulu's European Cafe 49 Cottage Street - 203.785.9218 Kid Friendly Cuisine: Cafe / Coffee Shop Review:home from home
Indochine Pavillion 1180 Chapel Street - 203.865.5033 Review:Great Thai and Vietnamese food at affordable prices! I'm always suspicious of restaurants offering dishes from more than one country (how can they do more than one cuisine well?), but Indochine is an exception. Great Thai and Vietnamese food is served by a friendly staff at this unassuming restaurant. I eat there about once a week, and love the Green Curry (uncharacteristically cooked with Chinese eggplant, zucchini, and red peppers), and their "Shaking Beef," as well as their Basil Beef and Cashew Chicken. Their tofu dishes are also very flavorful.
