Mystic, unincorporated village in Stonington town, New London County, southeastern Connecticut, on the Mystic River at its mouth on Fishers Island Sound (a section of Long Island Sound); settled 1654. During the 19th century Mystic was a great whaling and shipbuilding center. It is now a major tourist attraction, featuring a re-created 19th-century waterfront village and a notable collection of historic ships, including the Charles W. Morgan, the only surviving wooden whaling ship. The name of the village is derived from an Algonquian word for “great tidal river.” Population 2,333 (1980); 2,618 (1990); 2,618 (1996 estimate).
