Hamden, town, New Haven County, southern Connecticut, near New Haven; incorporated 1786. Major manufactures include firearms, computer products, pumps, machinery, and pipes. Quinnipiac University (1929), a junior college, and the Hamden Historical Society Museum are here. The community, settled in 1664, is named for the 17th-century English parliamentary leader John Hampden. In 1798 the American inventor Eli Whitney established a factory here that for the first time used interchangeable parts in the manufacture of firearms.
