Union City, city, Alameda County, western California, on Alameda Creek, near San Francisco Bay; incorporated 1959. It is a residential and industrial city situated in an agricultural area; major manufactures include processed food, paper, aluminum, plastic goods, steel and iron products, and chemicals. The first permanent settlement here was established in the early 1850s and named Union City. In 1853 it was renamed Alvarado, but in 1959 it reverted to its original name when it was merged with the neighboring community of Decoto.
