National City, city, San Diego County, southwestern California, on San Diego Bay, just south of San Diego, near the Mexican border; incorporated 1887. It is a commercial center with industries that include the manufacture of furniture and electronic and aerospace equipment, and meat processing. Cultural performances may be seen at the Lamb's Players Theater. The community was founded in 1868 on land that was once part of the Rancho de la Nación, which was named in celebration of Mexican independence and from which the city's name is derived.
