Merced, city, seat of Merced County, central California, in the fertile San Joaquin Valley; incorporated 1889. It is an agricultural trade and processing center. Merced has a junior college. A gateway to Yosemite National Park, the city is the location of the Yosemite Wildlife Museum. The community, founded at the arrival of the railroad in 1872, is named for the nearby Merced (Spanish, “mercy”) River.
