Manhattan Beach, city, Los Angeles County, southwestern California, on the Pacific Ocean; incorporated 1912. It is a residential and resort center. The community, first known as Rancho Sausal Redondo, grew after the establishment (1888) of a public transit system here. In 1900 it was renamed Manhattan, probably for Manhattan Island in New York City; the word Beach was added in 1927. Population 31,542 (1980); 32,063 (1990); 33,852 (2000).
