Lakewood, city, Los Angeles County, southwestern California, a planned residential suburb of Long Beach; incorporated 1954. Extensive development began in 1949; some 17,000 houses were built by 1953. The city is probably named for Lakewood, New Jersey. Population 74,654 (1980); 73,557 (1990); 79,345 (2000).
