Bella Pasta
5763 N Palm Avenue - 559.438.4452 $5.01 - $15
Fresh and light homemade Italian pasta dishes.
Cuisine: Italian
Recommended Dishes: Pasta New Orleans, Gnocchi, Tiramisu. Polenta
Review: Beagle says...
This is fresh Italian dining at its finest in Fresno. Don't expect heavy red sauces here or weighty dishes. This is Italian with a light flair. The pasta is homemade as are the sauces. Specials are posted nightly on an erasable board and usually sell-out fast. The food is tasty with just enough spices to tickle the tastebuds. The gnocchi is some of the finest in town. Service is friendly and non-intrusive. Recently taken over by new ownership, those that haven't been eating here for years can actually get some attention from the staff. Bella Pasta used to be an "in-crowd" type of place until the changeover. Wine is now served in glass as opposed to plastic and the friendly wait staff has been kept on while the "snobbery" apparently has moved on. Don't leave without trying the Pasta New Orleans (spectacular!) and the tiramisu.
Review: The best in town!
Bella Pasta is by far the best Italian food in town. None of that canned red thick sauce! The polenta is the best I've ever had...you've got to try it!
Al's Cafe
1823 W. Olive Ave. - 559.233.9226
Breakfast and lunch served at any time. ATM machine on premises.
Cuisine: Mexican
Recommended Dishes: Chile Verde and Carnitas...homemade chile beans Chili Verde Enchiladas Huevos Rancheros, Hot Sauce on the side, Al's potatoes.
Review: Al's Cafe review
Al's serves great Mexican and American dishes. The service is friendly and fast. The owners are on the premises and they greet each and every customer. Mary, one of the owners, treats her customers as if they were family. A great place to eat. The chile verde is the best anywhere. It is spicy and flavorful and plentiful. You never go away hungry.
Review: Exellent Food and Service
Al's Cafe is one of the best spots in Fresno to eat. The food is excellent, offering both American and Mexican cuisine. The service is excellent and the owners are on site all of the time, so the quality of the food is consistent. If you have a chance, eat there, and by all means try the Chili Verde Enchiladas.
Review: Beagle says...
It is always difficult to resist a glowing restaurant review. Put two back to back and resistance is futile. Such was the case with Al's. Upon arriving at this converted Wendy's, it becomes evident that Al's is not gourmet dining. The restaurant itself is very sparsly furnished. Think "very cheap date." In looking at other tables, the portions are huge, slopped with sauces, cheeses, well, everything craved by high-cholesterol junkies. But restaurants should be primarily about the food, so long as the place passes health inspection (which Al's certainly would), one should look past presentation whenever possible. One is generally greeted nicely at Al's, but momma Al is not all that available to every stranger. However, Al's dishes out some wonderful, down-home Mexican food. The huevos rancheros is especially good, topped with Al's own special and spicy sauce full of plentiful, fresh chunks of pork. Hot sauce on the side is provided, if requested, not as a small jar of Tabasco, but as a coffee cup full of homemade, spicy brilliance. The Mexican food dishes here are authentic, tasty and plentiful. As other reviews have so accurately noted, one doesn't leave Al's hungry. Looking for a quality coffee house with a Mexican flair and just good food? Al's is a good bet. One note, the breakfast is great, but the coffee is weak Folger's style. Ah, just like the old coffee house days.
Echo Restaurant
609 E Olive Ave - 559.442.3246 $30.01 - $50
Dinner Tuesday through Saturday. Hours are 5 pm - ?\n\nThe atmosphere is relaxing. Dress ranges from casual jeans to dressy. Handpainted murals grace the walls.<P>Menus are ala carte. Entrees are $18-28.<P>Food is locally grown, organically when possible. The menu highlights California cuisine.
Cuisine: Vegetarian
Recommended Dishes: Anything the staff recommends Bread Pudding for dessert and any fish dish on the menu. Bread Pudding
Review: Echo
Menu changes daily. Many vegetarian items are offered. If you're uncertain, choose the dinner prix-fixe selection. Your tastebuds will always thank you.<P>The staff is helpful and pleasant but not overly friendly. This is not a place to take the kids for a birthday; it's best for "adult" dinners. <P>After eating here quite a few times, I have yet to be disappointed and consider this to be one of, if not the best restaurant in the Fresno area. <P>The head chef, Tim Woods, trained with and is influenced by Alice Waters of Chez Panisse fame. Do not miss a chance to have a wonderful dining experience!

Review: Best subs in Town!!
I had my husband's surprise party catered & delivered by Port of Subs(Nees/Blackstone near Riverpark)and was I impressed!! I had always loved their food, but didn't really know what a variety of platters they had to offer...Well, needless to say, everything was delicious and the whole process was handled so professionally! Will and the crew did an excellent job. A++++++
Review: Valley's Best Sandwich!
This locally owned sandwich shop is by far the Los Angeles Lakers of sandwiches. The meats and cheeses are freshly sliced before your eyes. Pick your bread and top it off with the veggies of your choice. Forget Subway and Jared. Port of Subs beats every other valley sandwich maker in my taste test. Custom made sandwiches to your liking. Port of Subs is my choice for lunch and dinner when I'm in a hurry or even when I just need to relax in the cool dining establishment. Take my advice. Check out Port of Subs today. You won't be disappointed. If you aren't satisfied I know the friendly staff and owner will make things right.
Irene's Cafe
747 E Olive Avenue - 559.237.9919 $5.01 - $15
Cuisine: Breakfast / Brunch
Recommended Dishes: Bacon, Eggs, Coffee. Tuna salad sandwich, the fries/onion rings basket
Review: Beagle says...
Don't miss breakfast at Irene's. This is down home breakfast at its finest. Nothing fancy here. Good coffee, poured regularly and with reckless abandon, eggs scrambled perfectly, thick meaty bacon, perfectly browned and buttered toast. One cannot say enough about a relaxed breakfast at Irene's. Don't expect anything more than what you would get from a breakfast at your aunt's house, other than Irene at the register and a guest list straight from the Tower District (read: not your average Fresnan, but much more interesting).
Review: Higgins loves this place
The place to go for breakfast to unwind from the previous day. The employees and customers are all kick back which I love (since most of Fresno is not). My buddies (hey Murray) and I go here and have a cup of coffee and some breakfast while we discuss life. You can sit outside and smoke, which I love, and the coffee truly is bottomless. All the food is wonderful, but the service can lag when the place is full.
Luby Restaurant
1075 E Bullard Ave Suite 103 - 559.439.8357 $5.01 - $15
Primarily a take-out Chinese restaurant in a strip mall. There are only 3 or 4 tables for dining in.
Cuisine: Chinese
Review: Luby's has been around Fresno for decades, serving up reliable and very good Chinese food.
Review: Tofu and you won't know it!
If you're looking for awesome tofu that looks, feels and tastes like chicken, this is the place for you! I have looked at my tofu at times and have asked myself how in the world he does it -- or other times I've figured he's just lying, this is actually chicken. But, it's really tofu. Great.
Ovidio's Italian Restaurant
3097 W Bullard Avenue - 559.435.1396 $5.01 - $15
Good, old-fashioned, homemade Italian food for the non-gourmet diner.
Cuisine: Italian
Review: Beagle says...
Ovidio's is the best Italian restaurant in Fresno if one is seeking the closest thing to homemade yet still desiring to go out for dinner. Ovidios has the most extensive pasta menu in Fresno, and does every dish well. Homemade Italian food should have rich sauces, plenty of spices, hearty pastas of every variety and just enough secrets in the sauce to pique the imagination. Ovidio's is all of these. The pastas are always fresh and taste like something the owner personally prepared. If one is looking for something not on the menu, just ask. The best dish is one not even listed - penne pasta with a spicy meat sauce and vegetable mix. Molto bene! Don't expect gourmet here, expect real homemade. Service is always nice and friendly although sometimes pushed on a busy night. Show some patience as eating at Ovidios is like coming home again.
Review: Unpretentious and excellent
This place is simple. The food is great from the bread to the house Chianti. If you can't find a dish that satisfies you, you should stay at home. The very best Italian food for the money in Fresno.
Clay Oven
3209 W. Shaw, #105 - 559.225.1254 $5.01 - $15
Small restaurant in a strip-mall, run by an Indian family.
Cuisine: Indian / Pakistani
Review: Best Indian Food In Fresno
Beyond a doubt the best Indian food in Fresno, rivaling anything to be found in L.A. or S.F. Reasonable prices, wide assortment on the menu and it's never too busy.
D Hou
6015 N Palm Avenue - 559.261.2435
Cuisine: Chinese
Recommended Dishes: Tangerine Beef
Review: Great Chinese Food!
Simple atmosphere with attentive service and great food. Don't miss the Tangerine Beef or the Hot and Sour soup. Best bet is to order from the family style section menu and be prepared to take lots home.
Old Fresno Hofbrau
2820 Tulare - 559.264.4014
Located downtown Fresno near the Amtrak station. One side is the cafeteria-style food counter, the other side is the old massive and impressive wooden bar. There are tables on both sides, separately only by a half-wall.\nClosing hours vary, depending on how busy it is after about 8 p.m.
Cuisine: Deli / Sandwiches
Recommended Dishes: Hand-carved turkey or pastrami sandwich and a tap beer.
Review: Beagle says...
Grab a real sandwich. The meat is carved right in front of you and the "chef" is not too interested in casual conversation. This is the eating person's sandwich shop. Think "Subway" assembly line with real, home-cooked, hand-carved meats. Yummy. Grab the turkey or pastrami with a big goop of horseradish, slide-up to your booth, order a tap beer and chow down. Hey, if you're gonna die of heart disease anyway, why not go down happy, right?
Tower Bay Fish Co.
737 E Olive Avenue - 559.442.3474 $5.01 - $15
Restaurant is open until midnight on Friday and Saturday but full menu is served only until 10 p.m. \nCasual atmosphere, not costly. Offers specials, mainly of the fish and chips.
Cuisine: Seafood
Recommended Dishes: Cajun Catfish, Cajun Shrimp Fettucini, Seafood Kabob

Chipotle Mexican Grill
Fig Garden Village - 559.225.1166 $5.01 - $15
Cuisine: Mexican
Recommended Dishes: Chicken Chimichanga Carnitas Burrito
Review: Simple and tasty

Review: One Chipotle Is Like Any Other
Stark East German industrial decor with your chimichanga. The food is good but I can't stand the atmosphere. It is like a bombed out disco lounge that has been turned into a Mexican fast-food joint. Their corporate site talks about each one being individually designed, but it looks as though they used the same layout for each location. The corrugated steel garbage receptacles are an eyesore. The abscence of acoustic tile lends an air of clattering echoeyness. My biggest complaint is with the decor.
Review: Donde esta la casa de BIG ASS BURRITOS?
That is the billboard that I first saw before trying the food. It was just that, BIG, and delicious. The decor was hip and funky. The music was just loud enough not to be annoying. The service was energetic and friendly. I loved it.. I now eat here EVERYDAY at least once.. NO JOKE!
Santa Fe Basque Restaurant
3110 N Maroa Ave. - 559.226.7499 $5.01 - $15
Family-style Basque food since 1926. Formerly located across from the Amtrak station, now in the Tower District.
Cuisine: Basque
Review: T.D.'s Brass Tacks Restaurant Review
Shanghai
4011 N Blackstone Ave - 559.221.0227 $5.01 - $15
Large and usually very busy Chinese restaurant. \nClosing hours are approximate.
Cuisine: Chinese
Recommended Dishes: Chinese Style Beef Stew with Vegetables
Review: This place is always busy and therefore somewhat loud. The food is 'traditional' American style Chinese food, no surprises, but very well done. We have been at the least satisfied, but usually pleased, at every dish we've tried.
Review: We've been eating there regularly for years. It may not be quite as good as it once was, but it's still good. Spicy dishes can be *very* spicy or not--dishes can vary in taste from one visit to the next.
Sal's Mexican Restaurant
7448 N. Fresno St. - no phone $5.01 - $15
Mexican food from a Selma legend.
Cuisine: Mexican
Review: Beagle says...
Well, finally, Fresno gets to sample Sal's without the Selma commute. Now, Sal's is located at the corner of Fresno and Alluvial in the Fresno Jewelry Mart center. What a great development for local diners...or so one thought. Sal's in Fresno, unfortunately, is a big disappointment. Not that it's terrible. The disappointment is that Sal's is very average. The tacos taste, well, like something the average gringo would throw together at home. The salsa is, (heresy of all heresies!) bland. The chips taste like something from the low-fat section of a local health food store. Now, granted, this is a new restaurant still perhaps gaining its sea legs, but one would think that recipes are recipes. Sal's is a great place to take someone who wants to aspire to international food without really going out on a limb, but if it's bold, spicy, exciting Mexican food you seek, mark Sal's off your list.
Review: Vegan's delight

Review: Amazing
Wow! Holy Smokes! I just experienced the bursting amazing flavor of the shredded beef taco. Being a Californian, I have eaten at many Mexican restaurants. I enjoy the more ethnic and spicy Mexican food. This met my high standards. In my life time I have only had one better taco and that establishment no longer exists. If it is great shredded beef that you fancy I strongly urge you to go to Sal's.
Thai House
1069 E Shaw Avenue - 559.221.7245
Cuisine: Asian
Recommended Dishes: Spring Rolls. Ask your waiter, or check the blackboard hot tea
Review: Beagle says...

Review: Bad experience at Thai House
I visited Thai House based on "beagle's" glowing report and was sorely disappointed. The egg rolls he says not to miss were just average and the garlic chicken was dry and tasteless. Service was fair. The interior and table layout were not attractive at all. I will not return.
Review: Best Thai Food In Fresno
Old established Thai restaurant with a tremendous menu assortment and tasty dishes. Reasonable prices and friendly ervice but as with many ethnic restaurants, the staff sometimes doesn't understand unusual request. Quality is consistent but spiciness may vary with the cook and "not too hot" maybe translated as "hotter than usual" But it's one of my regular stops and will continue to be so.
Chilis Grill and Bar
7010 N Fresno Street - 559.432.3711 $5.01 - $15
Chain Southwestern Food.
Cuisine: Southwestern
Recommended Dishes: Chicken tacos if you have to and apple tart dessert. chips & salsa THE APPS. WESTERN ROLLS OR SOMETHING mushroom jack fajitas Chips and Salsa & Cajun Chicken Pasta I would be afraid to recommend any dish for fear of cross contamination Chicken Cri
Review: Beagle says...
"Well, here we are again." This might be a great "true" advertising campaign for Chili's Grill and Bar. Completely predictable. This is Southwestern food for the completely timid. There is nothing too spicy, nothing too bold and nothing really memorable about the food. Service is as close as one can get to fast food without a drive thru window. The waiters and waitresses get your order quick and drop it off on the run. If you're really (un)fortunate in Fresno you'll get Jenny as your waitress who is outright rude, dropping off your dishes with a bang on the table and ignoring your requests. The atmosphere is predictable and loud, the service bordering on non-existent and the food truly forgettable, so why go at all? This would be one of the restaurant wonders of the modern world.
Review: Nikki's Review
Wonderful! They need one in Johnson City, TN!
Review: The service is not great

Review: A First Timer to Chili's
I just got back from an awesome dining experience at Chili's. Everything about the restaurant was sizzling including our dinners! I had the Presidente Margarita and the southwestern eggrolls for an appitizer, and for dinner the mushroom jack fajitas. The service was outstanding the food was fabulous and the drinks...well I don't think I ever had a margarita that made me speechless before. I highly recomend going to Chili's.
Review: A faithful customer
Your restaurant is kick butt. It is excellent. I go there religiously!
Review: A Repeat Customer
I have been to Chilis restaurants in about 7 states...and love their food...Service isn't swell though!
Butterfield's Brewing Company
777 E. Olive Avenue - 559.264.5521 $15.01 - $30
A Tower District bar and grill with microbrewery on premises.
Cuisine: American
Recommended Dishes: A glass of pale ale at the bar. GILROY PASTA Ribs on Wednesdays, Gilroy Pasta, Sunday Brunch Buffet
Review: New Ownership
Probably the best change made was changing ownership. The new owners have an extensive food background and the beer is still being brewed by the original brewmaster. Paint, carpet and a revived focus on the food give this place 5 stars at an affordable price. I recommend you check it out.

Max's Market & Bakery
1784 W Bullard Avenue - 559.439.6900 $15.01 - $30
California Cuisine with good meat dishes. Run by the former owner of Harland's.
Cuisine: California
Recommended Dishes: Nothing
Review: Beagle says...
This is a very relaxing restaurant with an interesting, unique menu. The meat here is always prepared with a twist, such as ribeye dripping with horseradish butter. The meats in particular are well-chosen, never tough or tasteless. If one is daring, there is always a Thai dish on the menu or a fresh fish special. Try the sand dabs if you are looking for fish. Service here is adequate but not intrusive. Don't expect a great deal of attention, but do expect it to be light, attentive and there when you need it. Don't miss the chocolate truffle tower for dessert!
Review: I went here with my girlfriend. The place had a less than outstanding menu, and I asked if I could order off the lunch menu which was more appealing. They said fine, but when the bill came they charged me $10 more for my plate, and they said it was because I ate it here. I asked what else was I to do, leave?! I talked to the manager and he said I must pay and he doesn't care if I ever stepped foot in his place again.
