Fairfield, city, seat of Solano County, central California; settled 1835, incorporated as a city 1903. It is a commercial and processing center for an irrigated agricultural area. Manufactures include textiles, explosives, and medical equipment. Winemaking and brewing are important to the economy. Travis Air Force Base is nearby. Fairfield, founded in 1859, is named for Fairfield, Connecticut. Population 58,099 (1980); 77,211 (1990); 96,178 (2000).
